The Prevention Corps program focuses on educating and empowering communities across Connecticut to end the opioid crisis. Members will deliver Narcan trainings to the community at large to prevent overdose deaths as well as educate individuals on current opioid trends, distribute information on safe storage/disposal of medication, implement education sessions on substance misuse and mental health, and create/support awareness campaigns to reduce stigma.

Placement sites include colleges and universities, health departments, town youth/community services, Regional Behavioral Action Health Organizations, and nonprofits related to substance misuse. Members will serve on a three quarter time (35 hours per week) or part time (23 hours per week) Fall or Winter.

Grant Deliverables: The Prevention Corps Program will have 34 AmeriCorps members who will coordinate activities related to substance misuse prevention/harm reduction (with a specific focus on opioids), and prescription drug education in four Regional Behavioral Health Action Organizations that encompass the Greater Hartford, Waterbury, New Haven and Bridgeport areas. At the end of the program year, members will be responsible for: delivering Naloxone (Narcan) trainings to 1,000 individuals (community members, first responders, health care practitioners), 80% of individuals trained in Naloxone who complete a knowledge assessment will meet the minimum requirements for passing; building capacity for 8 organizations utilizing the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) public health model, 7 organizations will report increased capacity due to member placement; conducting 300 community education sessions; attending 200 informational tabling sessions; securing 50 partnerships with pharmacies/prescribers; and securing an additional 20 partnerships with clergy/faith leaders. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will engage 50 volunteers in community level programming to combat substance use in Connecticut.
